Prostate cancer awareness – Part 2
01/09/10
Only very recently have a few men begun to wonder why so much attention is paid to breast cancer research and awareness, but relatively little by comparison to prostate cancer. That breast cancer is a serious health issue is not in question. Over 40,000 American women succumb to the disease annually, and one in eight will contract breast cancer during her lifetime. Breast cancer is the third leading cause of death among women, behind heart disease and lung cancer, respectively. Still, the statistics for prostate cancer are sobering, with one in six men’s being affected one in four for black men- and nearly 30,000 dying each year. When prostate cancer is in its early stages, there are virtually no symptoms. But the time, effort and money spent on fighting breast cancer versus fighting prostate cancer is anything but proportional.
Last year, the United States government spent $699 million (more…)
Each year millions of Americans are diagnosed with cancer. Nearly 500,000 of those will be diagnosed with breast or prostate cancer. Many of our patients will have, or have had cancer. It is important to understand the range of emotions, causes of distress and interventions available to help them.Adjusting to a diagnosis of cancer is an ongoing process in which the patient learns to cope with emotional distress, solve cancer-related problems, and gain control over cancer-related life events. To add to the stress, patients are faced with many challenges that change as the disease and its treatment change. There are, however, certain predictable times when a patient is more likely to experience significant crisis. These include hearing the diagnosis, receiving treatment, completing treatment, hearing that the cancer is in remission, hearing that the cancer has come back, and becoming a cancer survivor. Each of these events (more…)
Breast cancer radiotherapy is at best an ordeal and at worst a living nightmare for many women.
The worst moment after being told you really do have cancer is being told you will need chemotherapy and radiotherapy as treatment to fight the disease. Having been there I know it’s shocking and I felt I just simply would never cope with it all. I’m writing this article and describing my experiences in the hope that it will make it easier for others to cope. If that applies to you then my thoughts are with you – good luck on your journey. Be strong and you’ll see it through.
My own breast cancer treatment regime was to consist of four treatments of FEC chemo, four weeks of radiotherapy treatment then four treatments of Taxotere chemo. This would all take the best part of ten months.
Having survived the first (more…)
With the HIV virus and a plethora of other STDs on the rise, it’s hard to even keep up with what’s out there. One thing we’ve learned to anticipate is cancer. This horrible disease takes many of us by surprise. Luckily, in this day of modern medicine, you can find a treatment for cancer.
Chemotherapy is a prime treatment for cancer. It works as a poison in the human body in order to kill the cancer cells. Unfortunately, poisons aren’t good for our bodies. This is where cancer victims have to fight for their lives and sanity while losing their hair. It’s a gut wrenching process, but one we humans have to deal with. Researchers are always on the lookout for that new treatment for cancer. This disease probably affects our species worse than any other illness. (more…)
Pancreatic cancer begins in the tissues of your pancreas, a large organ that lies horizontally behind the lower part of the stomach. Pancreatic cancer occurs most commonly in men between the ages of 35 and 70, it is the fourth most common cause of cancer mortality (behind lung cancer, colorectal cancer and breast cancer). Pancreatic cancer is usually an adenocarcinoma and it usually arises from the pancreatic duct cells which make up the major part of the pancreas.
Cause of pancreatic cancer
Pancreatic cancer is caused by damage to genes, but it is not known exactly why this damage happens. Evidence suggests that it is linked to exposure to carcinogens such as; cigarettes, food high in fat and protein and food additives. Possible predisposing factors are chronic pancreatitis, diabetes mellitus and chronic alcohol abuse.
There is some evidence that people who don’t eat many fresh vegetables and fruits (more…)
Millions of women are affected with breast cancer all around the world. Breast cancer is growing like an epidemic and is predicted that 45,000 patients will die from breast cancer, this year. If you feel a solid lump in your breast, you must visit a specialist for consultation.

Breast Cancer – A Dreadful Disease
10/02/10
Breast cancer can be viewed as a curse on life of a woman. It not only physically makes her less attractive but also breaks her morale and hurts her emotions as well. Unfortunately, out of every 8, 1 woman has breast cancer in the United States of America. In addition, in a report published by the American Cancer Society, in every three minutes, a woman in the United States is diagnosed with this problem. Isn’t it a sad data?
The main reason behind this dreadful ailment is lack of knowledge and information. Not all women actually know what can this disease take from them and hence, most women die every year. Also, there is no known medicine available for it in the present medical world. However, a lot of scientific research has been carried in this direction but no success has been registered so far. There is a ray of hope as the research is continuing and team of people is trying to cure the disease properly.
The best way to avoid the chances of breast cancer is take extra protection to eliminate the causes in your day-to-day life. Go for regular check-ups and screenings to detect anything suspicious. Many medical facilities conduct regular screenings for women in different locations. Screenings are very important for women who have a family history of breast cancer and women who have faced any such issues earlier.
To eliminate any such chances, you need to eat healthy, do regular exercise and self-breast exams to keep your body healthy.

Cancer is charterised by an abnormal of cells. There are a very large number of cancers in existence, including breast, skin, lung, colon, prostate cancer, and lymphoma. Of these, breast cancer is the most common cause of dead in women. Worldwide, it comprises 10.4% of all cancer incidences among women and is the fifth most common cause of death among women.
Breast cancer refers to cancers originating from the breast tissue, and most commonly from the inner lining of milk ducts or the lobules that supply the ducts with milk. In theory, it can occur in both the genders although incidence in males is extremely rare.
Research has identified several factors that can make a woman more prone to breast cancer. Fifty percent of the incidence has been known to occur in women over the age of 65. Excess body weight and obesity is also linked to higher incidence of the cancer. An unhealthy diet and a lifestyle with little or no exercise can also increase the risk. And finally, it can be passed down from parent to sibling and a family history of cancer particularly in the female members like mother or sisters can increase the probability of contracting it.
The cancer exhibits itself through many different symptoms. A common symptom is the appearance of a lump in the breast tissue or thickening in or near the breast area. Physical appearance of the breast and the nipple may also be altered, in addition to swelling or deformation of the skin on the breast. Unexplained nipple discharge could also be a symptom of breast cancer.
It is one disease where prevention or at least early detection is better than cure. Doctors firmly believe that early detection of cancers save thousands of lives every year. Women who display no symptoms of breast cancer but have either a family history of the disease or follow lifestyles that make them more prone to breast cancer, are particularly advised to undergo screening so that cancer can be detected at an early stage before it starts causing symptoms.

I love to drink freshly squeezed fruit juices as they not only taste great but come in so many colors and consistencies. Some fruit juices are full of vitamins, nutrients, minerals, digestive enzymes, pure water, and disease-fighting antioxidants. Fruit juices have the power to cleanse your body of toxic wastes. For example, Pomegranate juice has been claimed to help fight cancer; cranberry juice is good for the brain and help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. The red grape juice, like red wine, is beneficial to the heart. Prune juice which is high in fibre, iron, and potassium contains a natural laxative known as Sorbitol and is recommended for relieving constipation. Perhaps the most common fruit juice which is cheap and easily available is orange juice. It is loaded with vitamin C and has immune-boosting benefits.
Recently I read about a tropical fruit juice which has amazing health properties – the Sour Sop juice. The juice is white with a creamy flavor reminiscent of coconut or banana and has a refreshing sweet sour taste.
Sour sop, which is also known as Guyabano in Spanish and Graviola in Portuguese grows mainly in the tropical regions. The flesh of the fruit consists of a juicy white edible pulp that is high in fibre, carbohydrates, Vitamins C, B1, B2, and potassium. Fortunately it is also low in saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium. Sour sop can be eaten raw when ripe and can be made into ice-cream, sherbets, candies, tarts, shakes and other beverages.
Sour sop has been used as traditional herbal medicine in many countries. It has been used to suppress spasms, induce sweating and vomiting, Boiling the leaves of the fruit tree and drinking it help reduce fever and induce sleep. The crushed leaves can be applied to the skin to alleviate rheumatism and eczema.
Studies on sour sop have been done over the last few decades by leading medical institutions, pharmaceutical companies and universities. Findings and results have shown that certain compounds and chemicals extracted from sour sop fruit, seeds, leaves and bark appeared to kill cancer cells without harming the normal cells. They were proven to be effective in hunting down and killing cancer cells in the breast, lung, prostate, pancreas and colon.
In a separate study, scientists have proven that a chemical found in the sour sop selectively killed colon cancer cells at 10,000 times the potency of Adriamycin, a commonly used chemotherapy drug.
Conventional healthcare professionals may regard such alternative medicine and claims as unproven and even harmful. Indeed there are some drawbacks in consuming sour sop. It is known to interact poorly with antidepressants, affect blood pressure and destroy good bacteria in the stomach.
So it is wise to consume fruit juices, including sour sop juice, in moderation, especially those who are obese and diabetic.
As for me, drinking a freshly squeezed fruit juice after an exhausting exercise is a great treat.

Breast Cancer Symptoms
Health-conscious women all over the world are naturally going to be surprised to know that one out of 10 women suffers from breast cancer in the US. Well, you think, you did not know that it was so common. Unfortunately, it is true. Fortunately, it can be cured, if caught in the early stages, like other cancers.
Some of the well-known people suffering from this horrible disease include Olivia Newton John, Shirley Temple Black, and Kylie Minogue. In the former 2 cases, the cancerous lump was detected and they underwent mastectomy as part of the treatment. But that was because they allowed the possible breast cancer symptom of a lump to be disregarded and did not go in to consult with their doctor for immediate treatment. Kylie Minogue is still undergoing treatment, because she recognized the symptoms and got it diagnosed.
Your best way of battling breast cancer is to prevent it. That is of course by looking at the risk factors, which might cause cancer. For example, you have a close family member like a sister or a mother suffering from breast cancer. You need to go to a doctor regularly to make sure that your chances of contracting the disease is minimized at the very beginning. That also means that you are going to be on the lookout for possible breast cancer symptoms.
Some women have also inherited 2 genes known as BRCA1 and BRCA2. These women are more susceptible to breast cancer. They need to get the treatment done in the initial stages itself, so they have to be on the lookout for symptoms of this cancer.
So, naturally, you are on the lookout for all the possible breast cancer symptoms, which might forecast the prospective onset of this dread disease. These symptoms include an unexplained lump, which may be hard or tender, in the breast. You may possibly also find this lump underneath your armpit. You also need to look for other cancer symptoms like the skin getting red and itchy. You may find one breast swelling abnormally. That is because the cancerous cells in the body are absorbing all the blood supplied to the breast region.
Some of these cancer symptoms are definitely not painful in the initial stages. Nevertheless, there are some cells, which are growing in an unusual manner and are showing up in symptoms form. This sort of growth, whether benign or malign, needs to be checked up by your physician as soon as possible.
Cancer tests are normally done in the form of a mammogram, where an x-ray of the breast area is done to see the presence of the cancerous cells and possible metastasis (spread of the disease.) If the cancer is in its initial stages, it is going to be treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. So that means you cannot afford to disregard any symptoms which may foresee the onset of cancer. A proper diagnosis and immediate treatment is going to check the metastasis and prevent the cancer from spreading. So, if you see any of these symptoms given above, go in for a thorough checkup right now.
